“Grew up as a jr. sailor out of San Francisco Yacht Club, living on Corinthian Island, and have definitely experienced fine days turned harrowing! There's a lot to learn on SF bay - sometimes the hard way! I like to keep it simple, safe within common sense, more fun that that way -- yet sometimes pushing those boundaries fur fun!”
Aboard since 2015
From San Francisco, CA
Thanks JD for recommendations and precise instructions to be ready for the journey.
It was a lot of fun.
We had a great tour across the Bay. Caught up a good wind near the Alcatraz and did 20+ miles from Berkeley and out the Gate.
Catalina 22 is light and we've been going really fast with genoa and mainsail.
JD was very responsive and helpful showing the boat and outboard particulars before we headed out from the dock. He met us just when and where he said he would.
We had little wind for testing the boat (1-3 knots) so I can't really speak to how she sails. The rigging of the jib (club footed with a permanent reef to make the jib fit the boom) would have made a bit more sense if we'd had typical SF Bay wind. The gear on board (vhf & depth sounder) was old but worked perfectly well. Overall, the boat seemed sound.
Be careful trying to rent from this guy. I booked a date and he didn't confirm the request until 24 hours after it passed which by then was way too late. I didn't realize I was charged for this and politely explained the situation to JD for a refund but he lied and made excuses. This owner lacks integrity so be careful renting from him.
I had a great sail with JD on Hatcatcher. My guest for the day had to cancel, so JD offered to crew, and it was a very good thing. It was my first sail on San Francisco Bay, and we had 20+ kts and 2-4 ft seas for most of the day. If JD offers to lend a hand, I would certainly take him up on it. He has great local knowledge of the tricky currents and winds in the Bay. He can also sail the boat singlehanded if needed.
Hatcatcher is not a luxury yacht, but proved herself to be quite seaworthy. We were hitting over 7 kts on a broad reach, and higher when surfing the waves. We traveled 25 nautical miles over the course of the day, rounding Angel Island and Alcatraz. San Fran Bay is a stunning sailing venue, but not for the inexperienced sailor. You need to be able to handle the breeze and the waves.
I was looking for a great birthday present for my husband, who always complains that we never go sailing. So I browsed boatbound and found JD's "hatsnatcher." JD was excellent to communicate with and even came along with us on our first boatbound adventure since my husband felt that his skills were too rusty to sail on his own. JD stepped us through the boatbound procedures as well as all the nuances of his boat. He was a great instructor and his boat was clean and wonderful to take out on the bay for a half day. I would highly recommend renting from JD!
Pretty boat and great owner. JD had the boat rigged and ready when I arrived, and gave me a very thorough intro. The boat is well-maintained and safe, and handles well including in pretty heavy Berkeley chop. Pretty well-equipped, and the self-tacking jib definitely simplifies things like tacking out of the harbor. We were sailing with some beginners and had some issues in the heavy air, and JD was extremely supportive and helpful. We'll definitely take Hat Snatcher out again.!
