Prime Number is a 41' cruiser-racer from one of the best American boatyards - Tartan Yachts. She boasts a full galley, head and shower, two staterooms, all-cherry solid cabinetry below decks, state-of-the-art electronics, an epoxy-infused hull, carbon fiber mast, electric halyard winch and in-boom mainsail furling. She is an ideal combination of sailing performance and comfort.
The Tartan 4100 is a beautifully designed cruiser-racer with a modern hull form, epoxy-infused hull and carbon fiber mast for lightness and strength. Prime Number was built new for the president of Tartan Yachts in 2004. She was launched in California that year. I have been her sole owner and skipper since 2005. I added the state-of-the-art electronics and in-boom mainsail furling (with electric main halyard winch) for ease of single handing. I have sailed her many hundreds of times (with and without crew) throughout the Bay and offshore. She is scrupulously maintained by the best Bay Area professionals and looks new. My personal sailing experience includes owning three sailboats in Northern California (starting in 1972) plus multiple sailing excursions in Puget Sound and the Gulf Islands of Canada, the Caribbean, the coasts of Spain and Portugal (and the river between them), New Zealand, and all of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence Seaway. I am a US Coast Guard licensed Captain.
Prime Number's large refrigerator is always stocked with complimentary beer and wine plus filtered water. When we speak about your day aboard (call me any time at 510-813-2583) we can discuss lunch preferences (sandwiches are included in the charter price, along with an assortment of snacks). There is no smoking aboard Prime Number - I am happy to try to arrange a charter on another vessel that allows smoking if that is your preference.
A typical day on the Bay starts mid-morning from the dock in Alameda. After a crew briefing while motoring out the Oakland Estuary toward the Bay Bridge, we'll raise the sails and choose which segment of the Bay Bridge to sail under toward Central Bay. Once in Central Bay, we'll set a course for the lee of Angel Island, arriving just in time for lunch. Your help sailing is always appreciated, but is never required. I sail Prime Number on my own, often, in the most challenging conditions our coastal waters have to offer.
After lunch we'll navigate through Raccoon Straits (passing Tiburon and Belvedere) then toward the Golden Gate and eventually crossing the Bay to windward of Alcatraz and then along the San Francisco waterfront.
For the more adventuresome, and assuming the tides are cooperating (we can set the schedule to be sure they do) we can head out the Golden Gate. Another side trip could be the Sausalito Channel or - if there's room at the dock - a stop at Sam's Anchor Cafe in Tiburon for a drink.
The possibilities are endless, as Prime Number is a true passage maker with all the comforts of home.
The day will end back at the dock in Alameda. I invite crew to ask me about staying aboard Prime Number before or after your sailing day. For me, there is nothing like an overnight aboard.
We had a fantastic day with Steve, a great skipper, and very hospitable. we could not have had better weather or wind. Prime Number is one of the most beautiful boats I've sailed on. He had jackets for us if we got cold, great food and drinks, and was an expert on Bay sailing. Thank you so much Steve, you made my son's birthday celebration extra special. It was just perfect.
Five friends and I spent a half day on Stephen's boat and had an incredible time. The boat is beautiful and Stephen was friendly and knowledgable. He took us on a gorgeous your around Angel Island, and provided snacks, sandwiches, beers and waters for us. He's the kind of guy you want to spend your day with - would absolutely recommend him to others and go on his boat again!
We were out for a day of sailing as a send off into married life for one of our dear friends. We had a great time on Captain Steve's boat on a great day for sailing. Since most of us were sailing enthusiasts the somewhat windy day was favorable for us. Steve was a very patient teacher as we all took turns commanding "Prime Number". Steve also made sure we were very comfortable and arranged for all the snacks/drinks and delicious sandwiches for lunch. A bachelor party to remember!
Beatiful ride. Sailing for a day in the Bay!!! And seeing whales!! what a wonderful day.
Stephen is a great captain, he drove the boat alone. and he is a great host!
We had a special day with our friends.
I highly recommend his services!
We wish we could go on this boat every weekend! What an experience and what great company. The captain is awesome. He is a funny guy that makes sure you are having a good time. My mom got sick on the trip and he was just so amazing that she didn't want to get off the boat.
I am visiting from Hong Kong and wanted to host my client for a day of sailing. We both thoroughly enjoyed the day with Steve on the beautiful Prime Number. The weather was perfect and Steve was a great captain and guide. The boat is absolutely stunning and first class in every aspect. I highly recommend spending a day (or more) whilst in San Francisco. I will be back. Thanks Steve
