The Bristol 40 Yawl is truly a classic hybrid racer/cruiser. Sleek and fast, with beautiful lines and plenty of space below. Well equipped and good amenities, comfortable berths and lots of space in the cockpit and on deck make her perfect for a day of pleasure sailing or a weekend exploring the islands and inlets of the Chesapeake with friends.
Return at sunset to cozy Hartge Yacht Harbor, past the iconic Thomas Point Lighthouse. An easy 45 minutes from Washington and an hour from Northern Virginia, accessible from Route 4 so avoid Annapolis traffic on Route 50!
Perfect weather; perfect company.; great sailing boat.
Amazing weekend getaway to st Michaels. Juniper is exactly as advertised and a fun boat for the bay. Pier was super helpful and always available. Great trip!
Had a great weekend with the family. Juniper sailed wonderfully to Oxford where we spent the night comfortably (3 adults and 3 children). We had to motor home back to Galesville due to lack of wind. The boat is in great shape and well maintained.
Pier's boat was great! We had a great weekend on the bay and really enjoyed the sail.
We had a great day on the water with Pier's Bristol 41. She's a great boat, in good condition. Pier was a pleasure to rent from. He was responsive and provided detailed instructions for the boat and her quirks. Among the boats available for rent at this price in the Chesapeake Bay area, Pier's boat stands out for her beautiful lines, and she sails quite well. All in all, I can warmly recommend this boat.
Pier's Bristol is the best way to spend a day on the water. Although she does have some age on her, the charm of her build and vintage will enchant you. She is just as advertised, sails beautifully and engine is in great condition. We had an amazing day.
Things to know:
To get to the boat, you will have to take the old dingy off the rack, put it in the water, and row south into the mooring field to find her. You will then have to dock her in order to pick up crew and supplies. This was easy as she is the only two masted boat in the mooring field, but make sure you plan for this little trip out and back. No seats in the dingy made it extra fun.
No fuel gauge or depth finder calls for a little more experience.
We had 10 on the boat and were very comfortable.
We spent 2 nights and 2 days on the Juniper and had a really great time !
The Bristol 40 is a great sailing yawl. We ran almost 7 knots with 15-18 knots of winds and full sails. She's heavy and when on a roll breaks the waves with ease and charm. Running and standing rigging are in good condition and can handle some weather.
She can sleep 6 comfortably. The head/shower is spacious and works well. Pier told me he will upgrade the galley equipment which would be great for weekend trips.
Sailing the Chesapeake without a depth sounder is a definitely challenge. Fixing the depth sounder highly recommended.
The small row boat to take you to the mooring is a tricky ride with the wind in the nose, I strongly recommend temporarily docking the Juniper for loading (there's an easy docking spot close by).
Thanks Pier for an amazing weekend !
We had a great overnight trip on Pier's Bristol 40 over to St Michael's.
-Classic and beautiful Bristol, sailed well
-Sails and rigging in generally very good shape (Stbd frayed jib sheet should be replaced)
-Engine was easy to run and had no problems
-Solid anchors and plenty of chain
-Space for overnight was fine for 6, has v berth and 4 bunks- but note will not fit 7 unless it's a nice night for sleeping in the cockpit
-Pier was very accommodating of our schedule and communicated promptly
-Cabin wasn't cleaned before we came aboard, not terrible but dirty in some areas like head and galley and personal items lying around
-Pier was unable to meet us at the dock, which is a bit dodgy w a boat of that size, mostly for him as the owner!
-No depth sounder ?! This is the Chesapeake Bay we're talking about
-Holding tank and head really need to be cleaned and odors dealt with
-We didn't have problems, but make sure diesel tank is full and install a simple fuel gauge
-Stove wasn't hooked up (though we didn't try)
-Blue tape everywhere on deck- someone was in the middle of some woodwork, but not a big deal
This was Pier's very first rental, so totally understandable that there would be some minor bugs. We had a great time and I would rent this boat again. Currently it is great for a daysail (apart from depth sounder), but before another overnight I would make sure a few of the issues mentioned above have been addressed.
