This was my first rental for my 25th and it was a great time! Jim was very understanding and pleasant the whole time and even had it waxed before pick up! And all the registration was up to date! Boat handle like a dream! I will be renting this boat again
First, Jim is a nice guy with a good attitude. However, this rental was full of problems. All of them, however, could be resolved with time and experience. This was his first rental. Here are the issues that need resolved:
1 - Jim was a bit late to meet us at the marina, but he was having trouble with his truck.
2 - When he arrived, the truck broke down, so we couldn't put the boat in the water, but his wife was able to get someone else to help after some time. This, and the registration/police issues that follow, resulted in us entering the water two hours after our meeting time. Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal, except that I had to drive 5 hours back to my home after we finished the rental. So, I ended up getting home very late.
3 - There was no registration with the boat, and the registration stickers had expired. Jim believed the stickers were stolen, and called the police to file a report. I was interviewed by the police.
4 - The boat had not been in the water in three years, and although the battery was low when he charged it, he brought it anyway. The voltage was low, which gave us problems starting both engines at the same time. We managed anyway with little discomfort. However, we were a bit concerned when the running engine kept dying while trying to start the other side.
5 - The wakeboard didn't have boots (which Jim forewarned me of before doing the deal), so it isn't usable.
6 - The tube didn't have a pump, so we had it pumped at the local marina (for free). This results in a ~20 minute delay in using the tube, so I'd recommend that a pump is supplied for the tube.
7 - The check engine light came on during our voyage, but presented no issues that we could see.
8 - The boat is a bit dirty, but that's to be expected when it has been sitting for a few years. This wasn't a big deal. I've owned several boats, and the cleanliness of this boat isn't outside of ordinary. I would recommend it be cleaned thoroughly before renting however, because it is standard practice to give a renter a high-quality product, and rental companies make sure this happens.
9 - There was only one adult ski life jacket with the boat. All others were children's life jackets. There were emergency adult life jackets provided, but they aren't the type you would use to ride a tube or skis. We only had three people, so this didn't affect us, but would be a problem if two people were going to ride at any given time.
Overall, my friends and I had a great day on the water, but it was very frustrating in the beginning. A renter should never have a boat with expired stickers and missing registration (the police confirmed the registration was valid). Additionally, renters shouldn't have to deal with police...ever. The other issues with maintenance and cleanliness can be resolved easily and should be before the boat is rented again.
